5 Francs - Silver Coin?

Anybody has any idea about silver content (if any) in 5 Francs coins?

This is a 1841 coin that I just received as a gift and the giver claims that this is a silver coin.

Any help? Any directions?

Thanks

I think it is .72 ounce of silver. Who is on the front King Louis Phillipe?

Great gift, great coin. I have many 5 Franc coins. I would recommend keeping it and collecting the rest of the 5 Francs. Napoleon, Napoleon III, Charles X, Louis XVIII, etc.

It is .900 fine and should weight 25g

I guess that it is a French coin... Belgium also issued 5 Francs in 1841 (same fineness, same weight)

Attached are pictures of the Belgian 5 Francs from 1841.... I realy doubt that you have such a coin, as the Web page I have copied it says that it is of the highest rarity :proud:

@SilverBull71:"I would recommend keeping it and collecting the rest of the 5 Francs. Napoleon, Napoleon III, Charles X, Louis XVIII, etc."

This indeed a very good collection, because French coins have been widely used and copied. Officially in the Latin monteary union (France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and Greece), and inofficially in several other countries (Spain, Vatican, Yuguslavia, ...)

And BTW, there are gold coins too....

I have the French version, 1841. What does it mean .900 fines? 22.5g of pure silver (out of 25g total coin weight)?

Thanks for help

Yes, the coin is 90% silver. So the silver content should be 90% of the total weight.

How about a 1968 5 Franc coin, and a 1964 Greek 30 Drachma coin please. Brought 'em back from the Med back in my military years.

1968 5 Francs: http://www.dani2989.com/gold/pieceargent240905gb.htm

III. 5 francs Semeuse.
Diameter: 29 millimeters
Weight: 12 grams
Content: 835/1000
Quantity of silver : 10.02 grams
Engraver: Louis Oscar Roty
Quantity strikes(knocks): 195.2 millions
Period: 1960 has 1969
Number of models: 10
I bought maybe 30 of them at a coin shop, and it was my cheapest silver buy ever at 60% spot.

Very pretty coin IMO, especially when in good condition. I had been trying to convince a relative to invest in silver for quite some time with no success. Then I showed this coin to her and she was like "Wow" and bought a few.

Much thanks for the French and Greek coin information. I appreciate it. It's obvious that the 30 Drachma coins is silver but not so obvious with the 5 Franc coin. Fact, I was thinking about giving the Franc coins away...changed my mind now thanks to you GIMers.
